Oh, for a life on the rolling sea... or on the not-so-mobile harbor. The docks have long been a waystation for many kinds; travellers, beggars, whores, con artists, souvenir vendors, map sellers... Anyone of any creed, race, belief and organization can be found here. Longshoremen work their nets alongside crusty sailors; tanned prostitutes offer waxy smiles to unfamiliar visitors from overseas.
Here, seagulls screech over choice bits of floating fish, beachcombers search the sand for flotsam of some value to be salvaged. Beneath the creaking old wooden docks, children play, homeless take refuge from the sun and fishermen count their haul. Here, like in the Red Lantern District, one can find almost anything one would wish to purchase, though its origins might be shady at the very least.
And aside from the people? Why, the places of course! No where else can you find seafood markets with fresher fish. The exotic curio shops that line the waterfront are a must-see, claiming to hold mummies, two-headed calves and giant jellyfish as well as inexpensive gifts and hand-inked postcards. There are many low-cost taverns and cramped inns in this area as well, playing host to a myriad of unsavory elements such as pirates, bootleggers, and more.
When travelling this area, it's always best to act as though you belong there and know what you're doing, even if you don't. Steer clear of any place with a type of torture or disease as part of its name and keep your coin hidden at all times. Pickpockets run rampant on the docks and if you lose your coinpurse there, you'll never see it again. The docks after sunset is a less-than-safe place to be. Travel in groups with lots of prominent weapons.
